New advances in allergy testing and treatment

For many years, allergy testing has involved extensive skin scratch testing where concentrated extracts of the allergens in question are injected into the skin, and the resulting reaction is evaluated. This is painful and cumbersome, with incosistent results for the testing. The world of allergy testing had finally advanced into the future, right here in Sarasota

“There are many reasons for the continued prevalence of skin testing,” states Dr. Leonard A. Rubinstein, an Ears, Nose, and Throat Specialist in Sarasota who has been treating patients with allergies for over 20 years. He too was originally trained in allergy skin testing, but made a conscientious decision to forego subjecting patients to it. So why is it so important to identify the source of allergy problems, rather than simply treating the symptoms with antihistamines, steroids, nasal sprays, and other pharmaceutical agents? “Medications have associated side-effects for both children and adults…it’s not safe to take medications long-term,” states Dr. Rubinstein. Research has shown that both food and environmental allergies have been implicated in a wide range of medical conditions affecting virtually every part of the body—from mildly uncomfortable symptoms such as indigestion and gastritis, to severe illnesses such as celiac disease, arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, and chronic infection. Allergies have been linked to serious disorders of the central nervous system including depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has also been associated with allergies.

Food allergies cause the immune system to synthesize and release reactive chemicals such as histamines, cytokines, lymphokines, and interferons. These hormone-like substances can dramatically influence cellular physiology, producing far-reaching effects of the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. “Even your natural hormone secretions can become imbalanced as a result of untreated allergies, leading to mood disturbances, headaches, depression, irritability, insomnia, and even low libido problems,” states Dr. Rubinstein who, in addition to his original specialty in Ears, Nose, and Throat, has received formal post-graduate training in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, and has become a Diplomat of the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine.

Dr. Rubinstein serves as the Medical Director of the Allergy Clinic of Sarasota, a CLIA state-licensed allergy testing laboratory that performs thousands of allergy blood tests yearly.

Over the past 20 years in Dr. Rubinstein’s office, patients have been spared from the painful and confusing skin testing as a result of this new, in-vitro, allergen-specific IgE testing method that has quickly grown in popularity to be considered the “gold standard” in allergy testing. Dr. Rubinstein prides himself in his uniquely integrative approach to Allergy which includes conventional (Western) components as well as Homeopathic and Oriental components. He believes in assessing the patient’s nutritional needs, their environment, and even their hormonal balance. His recommended treatment is also much less painful than the traditional allergy shot regimen. As an alternative, he offers allergy drops administered under the tongue, also known as sublingual immunotherapy. The drops are absorbed by the dendritic cells located under the tongue that prove to be a more effective route to build tolerance to antigens. Additionally, the drops tend to cost less and require fewer clinical visits, and can conveniently be taken at home.

Strengthening our immune system

The immune system is a complex network, the first line of defense that protects us from invading organisms. Many micronutrients can help us with a stronger immune system, while the lack of these micronutrients may contribute to immune supression.

Dr. Leonard A. Rubinstein is an expert in his field of study and can determine which nutrient patients are deficient is, while recommending a well-constructed treatment plan customized to each individual patient.

A few examples of important micronutrients are Vitamin C, Zinc, Probiotics, or other antioxidants.

These dietary supplements are widely available in health food stores, pharmacies, and even grocery stores, but beware! Not all supplements were created equal. The bioavailability of many of these products is very low, meaning the amount of nutrient hat gets absorbed in the body can be as low as 15-20% of what is on the label! Choose certified pure supplements, that will deliver the nutrient to your body in its pure, powerful form, so that it can actually contribute to your well-being. Dr. Rubinstein offers a variety of these certified pure products throughout his comprehensive medical practice in Sarasota.

With the appropriate nutritional counseling, supplementation, and lifestlye enhancement, you can achieve optimal results, too. For more information contact Dr. Rubinstein at 941-957-3223!

The cause of all cancers

Cancers are caused by gene mutation. Oxidative stress, which is identifiable through 24-hour urine testing offered by our practice, accelerates the mutation, but it may not be the primary factor.

There are many nutrients that have been shown to favorably reverse gene alterations involved in cancer progression. Vitamin D has shown to slash prostate cancer risk in many patients. Our offices offer testing for prostate cancer as well as nutritional supplementation.

The dietary choices of most men negate the body’s natural protetcive barriers, hence fueling the cancer growth. This process, however can be identified, and treated if detected early.

Dr. Rubinstein specializes in comrehensive healthcare all men could benefit from. Call our office at 941-957-3890 to schedule your intial visit.

High antioxidant diet associated with fewer strokes

Swedish researchers found that consuming a diet that is rich in atioxidants may be associated with a lower stroke risk factor, in women.

The study conduced in 2011 evaluated almost 6,000 women with a history of vascular disease, and over 30,000 women with no history. For women with no history of the disease there was a 17% lower risk of stroke. For women with a history of heart disease, there was a 46% lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

Why estrogen balance is critical for men

Men, just as women do, produce estrogen. Years ago estrogen levels were only thought to be important for women. Now we know, that this is not the truth.
When estrogen levels are out of balance, the risk of degenerative disease including arthritis in aging men multiplies tenfold. Clinical studies conducted in the last fifteen years showed that men with elevated estrogen levels doubled their risk of stroke and had a higher incidence of coronary artery diseases. Men who presented with prostate enlargement or cancer had higher blood estrogen levels, than those who did not have these conditions.
Insufficient estrogen levels, however, predispose men to osteoporosis, or bone fractures.
How can men control their estrogen levels and so take care of their health before further medical issues arise?
First off, it is important to know that men need testosterone to synthesize estradiol in their bodies. Increasing free testosterone levels with safe and controlled means, like utilizing bioidentical testosterone and chrysin can supress aromatase, an enzyme that robs men from their testosterone while exposing them to higher than optimal estradiol (a type of estrogen).
How do men find out what their current testosterone levels are?
Physicians can prescribe a number of tests to check patients’ hormone levels. These tests range from blood testing, saliva testing to 24-hour urine testing, checking hormones in their various forms.
Even though comprehensive testing may be costly, prevention is always less expensive than chasing a chronic illness that arose from their hormonal imbalances.
Not only can testing and treatment save your life, but it can enhance the quality of your life.

This Just In: “Tickle Lipo!”

Recently featured on Good Morning America, Nightline, and The Doctors, “Tickle Lipo,” or custom acoustic liposuction, is a groundbreaking new system of liposuction. It has been used in Europe to produce striking results for years, and is now approved by the FDA for use in the United States.

There are a few factors that set “Tickle Lipo” apart from traditional liposuction techniques, and their effects are remarkable. First, it works by cannulas that vibrate at a high frequency in a three dimensional pattern. This liquefies the fat allowing it to simultaneously be aspirated, and preserves the surrounding tissue for smoother results and more rapid recovery. Second, the cannulas are air powered, and do not create heat. This is ideal for reusing the fat for those patients desiring a transfer for breast or “butt augmentations.” Also, no heat means less pain – so much less that it can be performed without general anesthesia, resulting in a much safer procedure and quicker recovery time.

As one of the pioneers of liposuction in the United States, Dr. Rubinstein has lectured on the revolutionary body sculpting technique at several major international medical symposia. He states, “After 30 years of performing liposuction, ‘Tickle Lipo’ is a great adjunct to the various techniques of lipo that we use to produce the best contouring results. Additionally, studies have shown that the fat harvested using this technique is able to survive transplantation to other body parts like the face, breast, and buttocks better than any other technique.”

Dr. Rubinstein is proud to be the first and only cosmetic surgeon in Sarasota and surrounding areas performing the “Tickle Lipo” procedure. Call today to set up your free initial consultation!

Allergy Clinic of Sarasota’s Modern Approach to Testing and Treatment

Allergies plague millions throughout the world. For many years, allergy testing has involved extensive skin scratch tests known as “prick testing,” where concentrated extracts of the allergens in question are injected into the skin, and the resulting reaction is evaluated. Many allergists have assessed the accuracy of this method, and determined that there are multiple inconsistencies in extract preparation, techniques of testing, consistency of result interpretation, and, without a doubt, significant discomfort and risk to the patient. Researchers have studied alternatives to this somewhat unreliable technique, and several advancements have been made. One major development came onto the market in the early 1980’s when 3M and several other groups began introducing allergy testing alternatives using a simple blood test. These “in-vitro tests,” now performed in the laboratory instead of on the patient’s skin (referred to as “in-vivo tests”), flooded the marketplace, and clinicians eagerly began evaluating these safer and more simple testing protocols for precision and dependability. The world of allergy diagnosis had advanced into the future!

Physicians actively involved in allergy testing found these laboratory tests reliable and much less invasive to their patients, who in turn were much more eager to undergo the tests, as they made the painful and somewhat risky allergy skin testing rather obsolete. Surprisingly, in many medical communities, patients continue to be subjected to skin scratch testing today. “There are many reasons for the continued prevalence of skin testing,” states Dr. Leonard A. Rubinstein, an Ears, Nose, and Throat Specialist in Sarasota who has been treating patients with allergies for over 20 years. He too was originally trained in allergy skin testing, but made a conscientious decision years ago to forego subjecting patients to it. “Allergy doctors, like all doctors, are accustomed to what they have learned and tend to resist change. Also, medical insurance continues to pay rather well for the skin tests, and doctors who are primarily insurance network participants find that the testing is relatively inexpensive to administer, allowing for a significant profit in the end. Many studies have found that blood tests are more accurate and give less false positives, but so many doctors still refrain from promoting them.”

When evaluating allergies, one needs to remember that some never affect the skin, so skin testing is the wrong choice for those whose respiratory system, gastro-intestinal system, joints, or nervous system are affected. The blood tests use a sophisticated methodology for identifying the specific allergy antibodies that may exist in a patient’s blood. Newer blood testing methods like the Immuno-CAP system of Phadia Corporation have shown to be quite accurate in identifying the presence of these abnormal antibodies. Furthermore, since food allergies can cause both immediate (IgE antibodies) and delayed (IgG antibodies) responses, only blood testing can identify them. “The delayed food allergies are referred to as ‘hidden food allergies,’ whose effects may not show up for hours, or even days after exposure to an antigenic substance. These can even cause a patient to gain and retain excess weight, even with dieting,” states Dr. Rubinstein, who has been very successful in helping patients lose unwanted pounds through allergy evaluation and treatment. “Spices, inhalants, and molds can be assessed to gain a greater insight into the etiological offending antigen.” Dr. Rubinstein serves as the Medical Director of the Allergy Clinic of Sarasota, a CLIA state-licensed allergy testing laboratory that performs thousands of allergy blood tests yearly.

Staying Young Through Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Our traditional view of aging is a slow process with inescapable obstacles such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia. One of the major reasons for this is the significant decrease in our hormone levels; as they drop, so does our quality of life.

However, thanks to advances in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, we do not have to end up this way. Identification and treatment of nutritional and hormonal deficiencies gives a new approach to the way that we age. By optimizing lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, nutritional supplementation, hormone replacement, and lowering stress levels, a better quality of life can be achieved.

Bio-identical hormones have a molecular structure identical to hormones that are naturally produced in the human body, and can help to replace them as their levels naturally decline with age, disease, or surgery.

“Age-related diseases can be prevented or controlled by following guided anti-aging principles,” states Dr. Leonard Rubinstein, Diplomat of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Join Dr. Rubinstein to learn more about advances and benefits of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy at our upcoming seminar on Thursday, January 26 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, or contact us to set up a complimentary consultation!
